5 types of perfume wearers.
We all have our routines when it comes to wearing our perfume(s). Most of us spray it in the morning before leaving the house, and, while it’s always obvious for me which one to wear depending on what’s waiting for me that day, I’ve always wondered how other people decide which scent to spray on their skin.
Throughout the many perfume making workshops I’ve led, I’ve identified 5 types of perfume wearers, and I’m certain that you fit into one of these categories. So, are you ready to uncover them? Let’s go!
The Loyal One.
The loyal perfume wearer has found their perfect match. Forever. Okay, maybe not forever forever, but it’s the one at least for now. If you are the loyal perfume wearer, then it means that you have that ONE perfume that is YOU. The same one – every day, all day, all the time. It’s your signature scent; it’s your personality. You claim it. You’re proud of wearing that specific scent because it’s truly yours. Your loved ones also know it because – whenever they smell this perfume (whether on you or on someone else) – they smell you. They might even randomly text you something along the lines of “heyyyyy!! I just smelled you on the train lol”. If you’ve experienced something like this, then you’re the loyal perfume wearer.
2. The Seasonal Wearer
As time passes, so do the cyclical seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Each season comes with its own, unique smells! I’m thinking about pumpkin spice in the Fall, wood burning in a fireplace in the Winter, orange blossom flowers in the Spring, and sea salt in the Summer. Just writing those lines makes me smell the seasons in my mind! Well, the seasonal perfume wearer understands that each season has a different scent and mimics this on their body. Their Winter perfume might have warm, comforting notes of coffee or maybe chocolate. Moving into the Spring, they will most likely switch to deep florals with maybe notes of muguet or jasmine, then for the Summer they might use lighter florals and marine notes. For Autumn, they might return to deeper scents like sweet orange and cinnamon. Switching perfumes according to the season and/or the weather is very common and is —in my opinion— clever.
3. “It Depends on My Mood”
Yes. I feel that. Mood perfume wearers say that they choose their fragrance according to how they feel. But, what most people don’t understand is that scents also impact our mood greatly. It works both ways! So, when you’re feeling a little down on the next difficult, rainy morning, ask yourself: are you wearing this perfume because it’s how you feel, or are you wearing it to make you feel better? Familiar scents go a long way in making us feel more secure and uplifting our spirits! It goes the same way for other scents that might make you feel happier or even sexier.
4. Setting
Selecting your perfumes according to what is going to happen in the next few hours is also very common. People who choose and wear perfumes depending on the setting usually have their perfume(s) for various situations: work, night out with friends, dates, family gatherings, interviews and so on. Lighter scents are usually chosen for professional and family settings when you want to blend in and/or feel comfortable. Stronger scents are most worn on nights out and/or dates when you want to stand out and make a statement!
5. All of the Above
A little chaotic and yes, that’s me! I have A LOT of perfumes between the ones I buy and the ones I make, so I do a little bit of everything. I have my one and only perfume that I’ve been wearing consistently for the past 10 years, but it’s more of a Winter perfume, which leaves my other perfumes to be worn during the Spring, Summer, and Fall. Then, for each season, I have a few that I wear given my mood and the setting. Yes, that means that I have a Summer night out perfume; a comforting, Fall, work perfume; a Spring, date perfume; and so on.
In the end, what matters most is to find what works best for you. Our smell and – by extension – our perfume is part of our identity and how others perceive us. That’s what I love the most about guiding people through creating their own custom scents, it’s about helping and witnessing them develop a scent that truly reflects them, a scent that they are proud to wear. So, come and book a custom perfume workshop now! Together, we’ll create a perfume that is completely YOU – no matter the season, setting, or situation!
